Project Summary:

  • Year: from 2013

  • Client: IIT (Institut für innovative Technologien)

  • Labels: Production, HRS

Project Description:

In collaboration with the Institute for Innovative Technologies (IIT), Hydrocell’s Co-Founder Walter Huber contributed significantly to the establishment of the European hydrogen infrastructure. Starting in the early 2000s, IIT led the development of green hydrogen technology in Bolzano, Italy. Huber and his team created Italy’s first hydrogen production and refueling facilities, with IIT achieving a national milestone in green hydrogen usage. Their initiatives aimed to demonstrate hydrogen’s safety and efficiency by launching hydrogen-powered public transportation and promoting public education through tours and seminars. The project established Bolzano as a leader in hydrogen innovation.

Results:

The collaboration with IIT yielded several milestones, including the construction of Italy’s first hydrogen refueling station, the launch of hydrogen-powered city buses in Bolzano (now more than 10 H2-buses operative), and Italy’s first 700-bar hydrogen fueling capability. These achievements raised public interest about hydrogen and facilitated strategic connections with European institutions. This groundwork has been instrumental in advancing Italy’s hydrogen economy.
