Feasibility study on the conversion of biogas to hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for South Tyrol

Project Description
This project examines the conversion of biogas to hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for South Tyrol. It leverages existing biogas production from organic waste in agricultural areas, proposing a process that purifies biogas to biomethane and then reforms it into hydrogen. The hydrogen would be used in transportation and other energy sectors. This approach aims to make hydrogen a renewable energy solution in the region by integrating local resources and infrastructure, thereby supporting a circular economy and reducing CO₂ emissions.
Results
The study confirms that reforming biogas into hydrogen is a feasible, cost-effective solution for South Tyrol, providing a renewable energy source that complements regional infrastructure. By upgrading biogas into biomethane and converting it to hydrogen, this process would lower emissions while offering new economic opportunities for local agriculture. The integration into the existing gas grid of Südtirolgas allows decentralized hydrogen production, supporting the region’s climate goals and promoting sustainable energy autonomy.
